The Seven Chakras: An Overview

Each of the chakras represents a different part of the body, a set of behavioral traits, and different phases of spiritual development. The Sanskrit word chakra means “spinning wheel.” These are a group of seven energy centers that run the length of the spine.

Yoga can help you align your chakras. It can get all of your wheels turning in the same direction and at the same pace by focusing your energy throughout different postures. Yoga and meditation can help you fine tune and control your chakras, bringing balance and harmony to your mind, body, and soul.

Chakras Location

There are seven chakras along the spine. From the perineum to the crown of your head, each related with a distinct portion of the body. Each chakra is linked to a specific body area, a color, a core emotional/behavioral issue, and a variety of other personal characteristics such as identity, ambitions, and rights.

Muladhara, the base of the spine, is one of the seven chakras (Root Chakra).
Svadhisthana focuses on the abdomen, genitals, and lower back/hips (Sacral Chakra).
Manipura is the solar plexus chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra).
Anahata means “heart” in Sanskrit (Heart Chakra).
Vishuddha means “throat” in Sanskrit (Throat Chakra).
Ajna is the Sanskrit word for “brow.” (Third-Eye Chakra)
Sahasrara refers to the top of the head and the cerebral cortex (Crown Chakra).

Yoga’s movements and postures can help you learn to direct your attention and energy to and from your body’s many chakras. This can help you compensate for sections of your body that are out of rhythm or are not active at all. Balance can be attained by balancing the energy in all seven chakras.

Kundalini energy is the name given to this spiritual energy. It can be seen as a coiled up snake resting at the base of your spine, the Muladhara chakra, in its latent form. Because the chakras operate as valves or pumps that regulate the flow of energy through your system, controlled and purposeful movements like yoga can be incredibly effective in realigning your chakras in a way that can have significant physical and emotional advantages for you.
